General Employment Requirements

While not required, a college degree--preferably a B.S. in computer science--is very desirable. We also like individuals with business backgrounds that have experience with software development. Work experience is not required for staff consultants but is very much preferred. We do not hire individuals with advanced degrees that do not have significant work experience. With or without a college degree, you must have some practical technical experience in either database application development or web application development. The quality of work experience is very important for individuals interested in the senior consultant and project manager positions. Most of our main-line consulting is in the web/database application development area. We look for people with experience in:

Staff Consultant

At Advanta Solutions, the position of Staff Consultant is where most people start out. Staff consultants are usually individuals with technical degrees from four year colleges and some prior technical experience relating to software development. As a staff consultant, you will have the opportunity to learn a great deal about several development environments. You will get training and a lot of hands on experience coding and testing custom business applications. You will learn about:

     · Our application development methodology
     · Structured analysis
     · Writing structured, object-oriented code
     · A wide variety of industries and business functions
     · Communicating effectively with management, co-workers and clients
     · Running a consulting firm and providing excellent client service

Once you've demonstrated expertise in one or two development platforms and effective adminstrative and professional skills, you will be promoted to Senior Consultant.

Senior Consultant

At Advanta Solutions, the position of Senior Consultant is typically the second position that most employees hold, having been promoted from Staff consultant. "Seniors" are usually individuals with technical degrees from four year colleges. Seniors always have quite a bit of software development experience.

As a Senior Consultant, you will have all of the responsibilities of a Staff Consultant, including producing technical designs, coding and testing and documenting your work. However, you'll have more direct involvement with other phases of the system development life-cycle. Your responsibilities will include:

     · Interpreting business requirements
     · Producing functional design documents
     · Coding and testing
     · Training client personnel and other Advanta Solutions staff members
     · Assisting other staff members with technical problems

Very experienced Senior Consultants that have an interest in management and seek additional responsibilities can be promoted to Project Manager.

Project Manager

At Advanta Solutions, the senior-most member of a project team is the Project Manager. This is a position with a great deal of responsibility and many rewards as well. The Project Manager has all of the responsibilities of Staff consultant and a Senior consultant but she or he also has additional responsibilities.

As a Project Manager, you must start out with very strong analytical, technical and interpersonal/communication skills. You will work directly with Advanta Solutions' Principals and will have a lot of client contact. Your responsibilities will include:

     · Establishing business requirements
     · Producing budgets and monitoring the budgets
     · Producing functional design documents
     · Supervising other staff members and reviewing their work
     · Reporting to management
     · Training client personnel and other Advanta Solutions staff members
     · Assisting other staff members with technical problems
     · Coding and testing

As you can see, Project Managers get to "wear a lot of hats", which makes for a very challenging work environment. This is a position for individuals that want a lot of responsibility and control, yet like keeping their technical skills sharp.
